Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Lexington Police Department is an area leader in using social media to help solve crimes. Several times a week, they use their social media accounts to ask for the public’s help in identifying and locating suspects or vehicles that have been used in these types of crimes in Lexington.

During the week of July 6, 2020, they were able to make great strides with tips from the public after running photographs from several crimes on their social media pages. In one case that involved the theft of some trailers and other property, tips from the public helped the LPD identify the suspects and recover two utility trailers and some other property that was stolen. These expensive items were stolen from the Public Storage and the Harvest Church on Sunset Blvd. between July 3rd and July 6th, 2020. In yet another case, they were able to identify a shoplifter who is suspected of stealing from a Lexington business in town. On Thursday, they once again did the correct thing and took to those same social media platforms to say thanks to the community that’s been such a big help.

In the same thank you post, a spokesperson for the Lexington PD said, “Some question law enforcement using social media to assist in identifying those involved in a crime but this case is a good example and outcome of why it’s done.” With the many eyes of the community watching and working with them, you can bet you’ll see more successes like this in the future.
