SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The deadline to apply for the state’s COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program (CVERAP) has been extended with all pre-applications now due to the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs (NJSDCA) by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 17. The program will provide financial assistance to eligible low- and moderate-income residents who have had a substantial reduction in income or who became unemployed as a result of the pandemic.
“The old adage is that the two most important things are a roof over your head and food on the table and, during these challenging times, people are having a difficult time doing both of those,” said Senator Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr. of South Plainfield. “Anything we as a state, as a society, can do to help, we should do it. This is obviously a very valuable and necessary program.”
According to the state’s website (https://www.nj.gov/dca/divisions/dhcr/offices/cverap.html), applicants may be eligible for a maximum of up to six months of emergency rental assistance with assistance capped at the NJSDCA's fair market rent standard or the total of the rent, whichever is less. The program will begin paying rental assistance in September and qualifying households are expected to pay 30 percent of their income toward the rent. At the three-month mark, the household budget will be reviewed to determine if assistance is still needed.
Note, anyone receiving a subsidy from another rental assistance program or living in public housing is ineligible and completion of the online pre-application does not guarantee placement in the program. All participants will be selected through an online computerized selection process.
The application period opened July 6 at 9 a.m. and persons applying must be 18 years of age or older or be an emancipated minor to apply. One must also meet all applicable CVERAP income and eligibility requirements, including have a gross, annual household income that is at or below the maximum income limits for the county where they are residing (see chart below); be a New Jersey resident and rent a unit in New Jersey; be current on rent as of March 2020 as this program will not assist with arrears; have a substantial reduction in income or are currently receiving unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and have a lack of assets and savings to pay rent.
To apply, one must also provide the following household information: names, birth dates, income and assets information for all individuals living in the household, and an email address; for those who do not have an email address, the application process will allow you to create one.
CVERAP pre-applications, available in 90 languages, can only be submitted online at https://www.waitlistcheck.com/NJ559-2809; paper applications will not be distributed or accepted. Only one COVID-19 pre-application per household per county will be accepted; duplicate applications will be rejected. The deadline to file is Friday, July 17.
