The City of Lincoln has been awarded a $2 million Housing and Urban Development grant to help combat youth homelessness in the city. The grant is part of a 2-year demonstration project on ways to end homelessness in young people, a problem that has been amplified during the pandemic. At an announcement Thursday, Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said local groups will develop programs to fix the problem.

“This grant is for Lincoln’s youth homeless demonstration program, which will support a range of housing and supportive services specifically designed to support the young people of our community,” Gaylor Baird said. “Over the next few months, the Lincoln Continuum of Care will work with community stakeholders to create a comprehensive plan to use these grant funds to end youth homelessness in Lincoln.”

According to UNL’s Center on Children, Families, and the Law, more than 2,600 of the city’s young people ages 16-24 sought services to address a housing crisis over the past two years. Last year, 476 people under 24 years old experienced a homeless episode in a shelter or somewhere else. Lincoln was one of 22 youth homeless programs nationwide awarded the HUD grants.
