PEORIA COUNTY (HOI and AP) - A Central Illinois doctor, who's spent much of his career working in Haiti's clinics and hospitals, says the assassination of the country's president is the latest sign that people there need help.
In 1995, Dr. John Carroll and his wife Maria founded the not-for-profit organization called Haitian Hearts, which brings children and young adults to the U.S. for heart surgery.
Carroll said Haiti is a country of 11 million people in "a huge amount of distress."
They are our neighbors, said the West Peoria physician, and we need to do what we can to help.
"They need to be a sovereign country, but if we can help out in some way that's not injurious to them, we should help them out," said Carroll.
On Thursday, authorities said they detained 17 suspects for killing President Jovenel Moïse. Two of the suspects are said to hold dual U.S.-Haitian citizenship, and Columbia's government said at least six are former soldiers in its army.
The chief of Haiti’s National Police said Thursday night that eight more suspects were being sought and three others had been killed by police.
More information about Haitian Hearts can be found on its website.
