Ohio accepting new claims for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits - Crain's Cleveland Business

Ohio's online unemployment system is now able to process claims for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits after upgrades to the system, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services announced in a statement.

The program is available, starting Monday, Feb. 8, to the 134,000 Ohioans who have been waiting to receive the unemployment benefits that expired on Dec. 26, ODJFS said.

The federal pandemic program provides unemployment insurance to business owners, self-employed, independent contractors and others who do not traditionally qualify for the unemployment program.

The PUA program was originally created by the federal CARES Act in March 2020. It was renewed by the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which extended the program and modified some of the qualification requirements. That act was signed on Dec. 27.

The legislation provides up to an additional 11 weeks of unemployment assistance, up to 50 weeks total. The state unemployment system is set up to process those filings.

"Those eligible will receive all benefits they are entitled to, in addition to the new weekly $300 supplemental payments available to all unemployment insurance beneficiaries through recent federal legislation," said ODJFS director Kimberly Henderson.

Over the past 46 weeks, ODJFS has issued more than $8.1 billion in PUA payments to more than 834,000 Ohioans.
