ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- A local chamber of commerce pledges to look out for the needs of its member businesses in many areas. Angela Barth, executive director of the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce, always seems to be on top of whatever is happening that may be of value to the chamber’s members.
Currently, Barth is letting her members know that certain businesses can qualify for government reimbursement to help with indoor air quality during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Barth answered five questions, giving enough information for qualifying businesses to apply for the funds.
1. What is COVID-19 indoor air quality assistance?
This funding allows eligible private employers/beneficiaries to receive reimbursement for eligible inspections, assessments, maintenance and/or improvements to indoor heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to control the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.
Eligible for reimbursement are HVAC improvements that have been installed, made operational and put into service, as well as services received for these purposes, on or after March 1, 2020, through March 31, 2021. Funding for the program is part of federal financial assistance provided to the State of Ohio from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
2. What is the purpose of the program?
The program provides assistance to improve indoor air quality through ventilation and filtration in facilities serving older Ohioans to reduce potential infection due to COVID-19. Facilities that qualify can use these funds for eligible inspections, assessments, maintenance and improvements to HVAC systems, both installed and portable.
3. Who is eligible?
Assistance is available for non-governmental nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult day centers that have a physical location within Ohio.
4. How much funding can employers/beneficiaries receive?
Employers/beneficiaries can receive up to $15,000 in reimbursements only for necessary eligible expenditures to address the COVID-19 pandemic. This does not cover routine expenses. Employers/beneficiaries can use the funds to inspect and assess their air quality needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For example, employers/beneficiaries can hire an HVAC professional to analyze a facility’s system and to identify upgrades to improve overall system performance.
Employers/beneficiaries can also use funds to address improvements through portable air ventilation, filtration, enhancement of current filtration systems and other interventions.
5. Is there a deadline for spending the money or submitting documentation and receipts?
Yes. March 31, 2021, is the deadline for goods to be installed, operational and put in service and for services to be rendered. All documentation and receipts must be submitted with the completed application by March 31, 2021.
To apply for the funds, send an email to COVID19@bwc.state.oh.us. For more information, visit https://info.bwc.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/bwc.
A new office manager
“Here at the Rocky River chamber, we are excited to introduce a new addition to our office,” said Barth. “Office manager Chris Rini Slyman.
“Chris and her family have lived in Rocky River for nearly 20 years,” Barth said. “She grew up in the area and spent much of her career fundraising for nonprofit organizations in Chicago and Cleveland. Most recently, she worked for Magnificat High School, where she was the institutional advancement assistant and gala coordinator.”
Barth said Slyman was in search of a change of pace in her career, and saw this opportunity with the chamber as a perfect fit.
“I was interested in a position where I could use my experience and skills to benefit my community,” Slyman said. “I look forward to learning more about our local businesses and how we can strengthen networks and promote their services.”
Slyman serves on the fundraising committee for the One World Shop in Rocky River and is involved with the shelter meal program at the Journey Center for Safety and Healing -- an organization that provides information and services to victims of domestic abuse.
Her children, Emily and Will, attend Rocky River High School and her husband, Greg, is a commercial real estate broker for Howard Hanna Commercial Real Estate.
