DULUTH, MN -- In July, the Minnesota government allocated nearly $200 million to help residents impacted by the pandemic pay their bills, but only a fraction of those funds have been used.
With the deadline to apply for assistance quickly approaching, Duluth city leaders are urging residents to apply.
Adam Fulton, deputy director of Planning and Economic Development for Duluth, said the pandemic made Duluth's housing crisis even worse.
"People are facing housing instability due to job loss or due to other challenges that might result out of the COVID-19 pandemic," Fulton said.
In July, Governor Tim Walz announced the $100 million Housing Assistance Program, but only $67 million has been used so far.
The program aims to help Minnesota residents make rent, mortgage, and utility payments.
"It gives people some peace of mind in the midst of all this worrying that we're all doing intermittently about lots of other things in our lives right now," Fulton said.
At the start of the pandemic, Governor Walz also issued an eviction moratorium.
With landlords caught in a difficult situation, Courtney Gallo, utility operations paralegal for Duluth, said state funding could help tenants stay on top of their rent and keep their utilities on.
"This will be able to make sure that the families can keep their water on, can keep their gas services on, and this is a way for them to catch up and not end up somewhere that is going to be too difficult to come out of," Gallo said.
It is uncertain whether funds will be available again in the future, so Duluth residents are encouraged to use these resources before they are gone.
"It's out there to help people because we know there are people in our communities, not just in Duluth, but statewide that are facing crises," Fulton said.
Residents have until the end of the day Monday, December 7, to apply for help.
