Voting assistance centers open up in Butte County - Chico Enterprise-Record

OROVILLE — Several voting assistance centers within Butte County opened its doors Saturday morning.

However, the first day of the centers being open came with a few bumps as technical difficulties caused some brief delays.

“The machines were all down. They wouldn’t work,” said Patti Goodwin, the supervisor at the Bell Memorial Union voting assistance center. “The elections office had to come in and take all of our check-in computers.”

Normally, when someone arrives at the center, their name and address are entered into a computer to see if they’re registered to vote.

“Anyone who is registered to vote had to re-register and we had to bring them through provisionally because the machines are down. We didn’t have any way to verify that they’re registered,” Goodwin said. “Everyone is filling out a registration card again and voting provisionally until we get our machines back. It was a bit of a tizzy at first. We were able to finally work it out.”

Goodwin said no one would be turned away from voting despite the technical difficulties. If anyone didn’t want to re-register provisionally, they could go to the elections office in Oroville to vote, Goodwin said.

With election day on Tuesday, the centers opened to help voters with any questions or issues they might come across. Voters can vote in person, get a replacement ballot, receive language assistance or drop off their ballots.

In Oroville, a voting assistance center opened at the Southside Community Center. Voters were coming in at a slow and steady pace before noon on Saturday, said supervisor Sharon Mize.

“I am anticipating a big crowd on election day,” Mize said. “Vote early and avoid the crowds.”

The Butte County Clerk-Recorder’s office reported that as of Friday 70,171 ballots have been returned. That marks 56.2 percent of the 124,793 registered voters in the county.

At Chico State’s Bell Memorial Union, Goodwin said she also expects more voters to come by the center on Tuesday.

“We expect it’ll get busier come Tuesday,” Goodwin said.

The following voting assistance centers will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday:
