EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — The countdown is on until Christmas, and small businesses need your help more than ever this holiday season. One of these local businesses, Garage Sale Treasures, is run by a man who uses his profits to help those in need.

There are many hot deals and a little bit of everything inside Terry Demars' store. It has everything from toys, collector cards, home decorations, video games and DVDs. His biggest prize are the thousands of records on display for vinyl lovers to purchase.

"(It's) kind of a hobby of mine to buy and sell," Demars said.

Those who know Demars know he's got a bigger hobby dear to his heart. When customers leave his store with their new treasures, they are also giving opportunities for those less fortunate in the community. Demars takes the little profit he makes each month and donates it to Homeless Helpers, an organization in which he is the president.

The focus of the organization is helping those who can't get help from other organizations in the region.

"(It's for) people who fall through the cracks for shelter, communication, transportation," Demars explained.

He opened up the store six months ago after a canteen he ran inside Lagrave on First, which helps those with chronic homelessness, was shut down due to the pandemic.

"Sometimes I sit here for a day and make $15, then I remind myself I started a business in the middle of a pandemic," Demars said.

Word is getting out about Demars' business and the help he gives to the area's homeless. People have volunteered their time to help him tidy up the store. Others have donated stuff for him to sell, and some even throw a little extra money his way.

"(They) give me an extra five bucks at the end of a transaction because they know it's going back into the community," Demars said. "Making a very little difference is better than not making a difference."

Garage Sales Treasures is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located on Central Avenue in East Grand Forks
