A round of cold weather last week was a reminder that winter is fast approaching.
In fact, the cold weather rule has been in effect in Minnesota for a month now. The rule, administered through the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, protects utility customers from having their heat turned off between Oct. 15 and April 15.
In addition to this protection, the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Energy Assistance Program helps households pay their heating bills through the cold weather months. Michael Schmitz, director of the program, said the program does more than help households pay their energy bills. People can have fuel delivered to their home, use assistance to repair broken heating systems and improve their internet access.
Homeowners and renters with income at or below 50% of the state’s median income are eligible for assistance. For a family of four that would be homeowners and renters with income at or below 50% of the state’s median income $54,357. The program looks at each household’s income over the past three months to determine eligibility.
Last year, more than 117,000 Minnesota households received assistance with an average of more than $500 in aid per household. Schmitz said he’s anticipating a greater need for it this year in part due to challenges from the COVID-19 outbreak.
He encouraged people who expect to have trouble making ends meet to look at the assistance the program offers.
"I think anybody who's struggling to pay their energy bills right now and whose incomes are at below our income limits should apply,” he said.
To find out if your household is eligible, call 800-657-3710 and press 1, visit the Commerce Department’s Energy Assistance Program webpage, mn.gov/commerce/consumers/consumer-assistance/energy-assistance, or search for “energy assistance” at mn.gov/commerce for energy assistance information. The application remains open through May 31.
