WEST MONROE – Through the assistance of local partnerships, the West Monroe Community Center is providing much-needed assistance to West Monroe residents.
During the months of June and July, the Community Center, in partnership with the Ouachita Parish School System, is presenting the Riverbend Academic Camp “Imagine Your Story.”
The Riverbend Academic Camp provides approximately 60 students in grades K–3 academic activities in Math, English Language Arts (ELA), and Enrichment activities for eight weeks in June and July. The camp is made possible through the sponsorship of Entergy and The Rosemary Ewing Foundation.
Certified teachers and AmeriCorps members prepare curriculum-based academic and enrichment activity packets/kits for students. The AmeriCorps team delivers packets to participating students Mondays-Fridays curbside via bus. The delivery also includes meals from Ouachita Parish School System’s Summer Feeding Program. Students are required to return completed activities to show participation.
Teachers deliver virtual lessons in Math and ELA, and the AmeriCorps team offers lessons in Enrichment and Recreation. The virtual guidance offers assistance and keeps students engaged in learning. Students also have the opportunity to attend Saturday visits to the Community Center. For students who do not have technology and/or need extra help, parents can schedule visits to the Community Center for one-on-one assistance.

In addition to providing academic enrichment to students, the West Monroe Community Center is also working to meet the needs of the overall community.
Recently, the Living Well Foundation awarded Ouachita Outreach a $9,500 grant to provide needed services to residents through the West Monroe Community Center. Grant funds will be used for one year to meet the increased demand and needs of residents due to COVID-19 and strengthen overall services to the community. These services include assessment and connection to social service programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, unemployment and COVID-19 information as well as food, technology for connectivity to telehealth services and personal protection equipment for staff and residents.
“During the challenges experienced by our communities from the COVID-19 crisis, the Living Well Foundation initiated a special grant cycle to support disaster and crisis recovery as much as possible,” said Alice M. Prophit, President/CEO of the Living Well Foundation. “With this grant to Ouachita Outreach, we know the needs of families and children for access to tele-health services, including medical and mental health support, can be met with assistance from the capable staff of the organization. In addition, knowledge and access regarding government programs can be sought in a supportive environment. The City of West Monroe and Ouachita Outreach have both partnered with us to ensure these services are provided with ongoing viability. We are pleased to assist Ouachita Outreach in a valuable service for the community and people served.”
