JERSEY CITY, NJ - A Bergen County motorcyclist was pronounced dead 11:30 p.m. Friday after Jersey City Police responded to a report of a motorcycle crash.
Shortly after 11:00 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to Paterson Plank Road, south of the Congress Street intersection, on a report of a motorcycle crash with injuries. Upon arrival, responding officers found a motorcyclist with serious injuries after he crashed his motorcycle into a wall.
The motorcyclist was identified as Illich Ferrera, age 43, of Hackensack. The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The initial investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Jersey City Police Department revealed that Ferrera was traveling north on Paterson Plank Road when he may have swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Ferrera then traveled across the road and off the roadway where he ultimately crashed into a stone wall.
The events surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department.
Investigators are also seeking the public’s assistance to help identify a vehicle and its occupants who may have witnessed the crash. The vehicle is described as a large, older-style passenger van. The van is believed to be dark red and is described as burgundy or maroon.
