YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics announced its latest enhancement to the student-athlete experience today, June 16; a partnership with leading brand marketing consultant and best-selling author Jeremy Darlow. The partnership will grant EMU student-athletes access to The DARLOW Rules by Opendorse which, in conjunction with his latest book by the same name, is an online program that aims to equip college student-athletes with the tools to develop and grow their personal brands.

"We are excited about this partnership and The DARLOW Rules by Opendorse program," Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee said. " This just further shows our unwavering focus and commitment to our student-athletes, as we continue to build champions in the classroom, in the community, and in competition. Jeremy is an expert in the sports marketing field, and his expertise on brand building will benefit them now and well into their professional careers."

Darlow is a former director of marketing for adidas football and baseball, adjunct marketing professor, and author of the best-selling books "Brands Win Championships" and "Athletes Are Brands Too." During and since his role at adidas, he has worked with some of the most heralded athletes and celebrities in and around sports, including Aaron Rodgers, Von Miller, Adrian Peterson, Dak Prescott, Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa, Lionel Messi, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Snoop Dogg and Kanye West.

"We've made it a priority to partner with Universities that have proven to be dedicated to preparing student athletes for life beyond sports and Eastern Michigan has been at the top of our list since day one," Darlow said. "It's an honor to work with the EMU athletic staff and administration as we help put every student athlete on a path to landing their dream jobs and dream lives. This is about the next forty years, not just four."

Eastern Michigan will utilize the combined efforts of the Athletic Media Relations and Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) staffs to help educate EMU student-athletes. Overall, EMU is just the fourth Mid-American Conference school to partner with Darlow, joining Bowling Green State University, Miami University and the University of Toledo.

The coursework is comprised of short, easy-to-understand, video-based lessons teaching student-athletes from every sport program the fundamentals of brand development and communication. The goal of the program is to walk each individual through the process of recognizing their own brand, the value of it and how to maximize it.

Each student will graduate from the course with their own personal brand marketing plan, as well as a certificate of completion to include on their professional resume.

This announcement comes on the heels of a partnership of EMU's with Opendorse in the fall of 2020 to deliver digital content, especially professional photography, directly to student-athletes efficiently and effectively via an app. The partnership also provides an avenue to encourage student-athletes, coaches, and staff to help build their own personal brands, and that of their programs and the University.
