BRATTLEBORO — This southeastern Vermont hub, already seeking a town manager and police chief, now needs to find a new area school superintendent.
Andrew Skarzynski, head of the Brattleboro-based Windham Southeast Supervisory Union for the past year, will step down at the end of the month to take another education job in Connecticut.
“This was a difficult decision for me as I was looking forward tremendously to the coming years of exiting the pandemic and leveraging the innovative practices that have been developed over the past 15 months,” he said in a statement. “However, I have frequently used the phrase ‘family first’ and, in this decision, I must heed my own advice.”
Skarzynski, a former Rutland educator, began leading schools in Brattleboro and neighboring towns Dummerston, Guilford and Putney last July after Covid-19 forced the district to move to online classes. He’s set to depart as the union prepares to return to full in-person instruction this fall.
“Leaving the pandemic and entering into recovery requires a relentless focus upon student learning outcomes that is free of distraction — something that would be challenging in the best of times,” Skarzynski said. “I am confident, though … WSESU will enter into recovery in a strong position.”
A search for a new school superintendent is just one hiring process taking place in Vermont’s seventh-largest locality.
The Brattleboro Selectboard has extended a $26,000 contract to the national Mercer Group to help it find a new town manager to succeed Peter Elwell, who’ll retire at the end of the year.
Elwell will be hard to replace, and not just because he’s a rare unifier in a community known for diversity and debate. The selectboard invested $15,000 in Brattleboro’s last search in 2014, only to have three candidates decline the job before receiving an application from Elwell — the second generation of family to hold the post. His father, Corwin, was the town manager from 1960 to 1989.
“I will continue to contribute to the welfare of our community as a volunteer and supporter of various causes and projects,” Elwell has said. “However, after 36 years in local government management, I must admit that I look forward to making my future contributions in a supporting role.”
Local leaders also are seeking a new police chief to succeed Michael Fitzgerald, who retired last year.
All the new administrators will join Fire Chief Leonard Howard, who rose from assistant chief April 1 to replace his 43-year firefighting boss Michael Bucossi.
