NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio -- With all the talk about everything that is in the best interest of students during the coronavirus pandemic, have parents at home trying to function as teachers been neglected?

Not in North Ridgeville, it seems.

The North Ridgeville City Schools has created a program to help parents get familiarized with the technology their children will use as school begins on Aug. 26, 27 and 28 (depending on age and grade).

“The curriculum and technology department created The Ranger Parent Academy, a series of Zoom webinars for parents to learn more about the technology and programs the district will be using,” said Paul Hieronymus, the district’s director of Information, Technology & Integration.

“The webinars will help parents learn how to use programs such as Google Classroom and Google Calendar and technology such as Chromebooks and iPads. We are hoping that giving (parents) some training can make them feel more comfortable,” he said.

The idea for a Ranger Parent Academy came out of a survey of families in the spring that revealed a request for training.

“We are providing webinars, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, for each of our topics that include Google Classroom, Zoom, Intro to Chromebook, Intro to iPad and one on PowerSchool,” Hieronymus said.

PowerSchool offers parents and guardians access to their students’ grades and attendance data for grades 5-12, according to the company’s information. Students are supplied log-in credentials through their school system.

The schedule of the Ranger Parent Academy parent-training classes began Aug. 10.

“All were recorded if anyone missed them,” he said. “Access is open to all on our Ranger Restart page at www.nrcs.net/rangerrestart.aspx.”

The North Ridgeville Schools will be utilizing an overall hybrid model for teaching in the 2020-2021 school year that goes as follows:

· High school students will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 26, with an in-person school day. Each Wednesday, the high school students will attend school in person. The other four days of the week will be online classes.

Grades K-8 have been broken down into two groups, Group A and Group B.

· The K-8 Group A will begin Aug. 27 and feature in-person school days on Mondays and Tuesdays, with online teaching the rest of the week.

· K-8 Group B will begin Aug. 28 and feature online school days on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with in-person days on Thursdays and Fridays.

If help is needed, Hieronymus said, “Contact your child’s classroom teacher or the IT department at 440-353-1111. We will do what we can to help.”
